The headquarters, formerly a glass factory, was occupied by US troops and turned into one of their local headquarters after their invasion of Iraq in spring 2003.
Witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that the Resistance bombardment sparked a series of massive fires inside the camp, sending clouds of smoke into the sky. Powerful secondary explosions could be heard throughout most of the entire city as American munitions started blowing up.
Local witnesses said that the attack must have inflicted heavy casualties, inasmuch as four American helicopters could be seen ferrying the casualties out of the base in a series of repeated runs lasting more than 45 minutes. For the first time, Iraqi puppet forces were brought in to extinguish the flames, perhaps due to the fact that there was so much smoke that the entire area was obscured from outside view. US helicopters could be seen evacuating the casualties.
