We should have been consulted: Opposition
February 5, 2005 - 5:18PM
The Federal Government should have given the opposition a security briefing before taking the decision to expel a foreign diplomat, Labor said today.
A senior Israeli diplomat has been forced to leave Australia, it was revealed in the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv.
The incident had been covered up for several weeks and may be linked to a scandal last year in which two alleged agents of the Israeli spy service, Mossad, were arrested in New Zealand, the report said.
The Opposition foreign affairs spokesman, Kevin Rudd, said Labor had only been contacted last night about the diplomat's removal, after it became obvious the media was onto the matter.
"The normal convention is that the Opposition is briefed on matters of national security," he said.
"We are annoyed by the fact that stories like this break without [our] being informed."
The lack of consultation with the Opposition represented the Government's increasing arrogance on security matters, he said.
Mr Rudd said he expected a full briefing on the Israeli diplomat's expulsion when he returned to Canberra on Monday.
A spokeswoman from the Department of Foreign Affairs said the department would not comment.

*Australia has expelled a senior Israeli diplomat for an unspecified offence, media reports say.
The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper on Saturday said the diplomat was believed to have been told to leave a few weeks ago, but the move was kept secret to avoid any damage to relations between Australia and Israel.
It said the affair was revealed by the Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv, which speculated it might be connected to last year's row over two alleged Mossad secret service agents accused of trying to fraudulently obtain New Zealand passports.
The Herald said the diplomat's official duties included visiting the two alleged spies while they were in prison in New Zealand.
*Reason
The newspaper said a source close to the Israeli cabinet had told it the reason for the expulsion had to be serious, given the friendly relations between the two countries.
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer's office did not return calls during the day.
New Zealand deported the two alleged spies in September and suspended high level contacts with Israel.
