石原知事、英紙に発言
【ロンドン＝岡安大助】一日付の英紙タイムズは、石原慎太郎・東京都知事のインタビュー記事を掲載し、尖閣諸島（中国名・釣魚島）に関して「中国が占領しようとするなら、北京五輪をボイコットすべきだ」と述べた知事発言を見出しにとって紹介した。また知事は「領土を守るため英国のフォークランド紛争のような小規模な戦争も辞さない」とも述べたという。
石原知事は、昨年のサッカー、アジア・カップでの中国人観衆の反日行動にも言及し「北京五輪は、一九三六年にベルリンで開催されたヒトラーの五輪と同じ意味を国際政治的に持つ」とも指摘した。
同紙は、石原知事を「過激な国家主義者で知られる一方、世論調査で首相にしたい政治家のトップに指名された」と紹介した。

Mr Notorious seeks Olympics boycott and little local war

In an exclusive interview the Governor of Tokyo says that Japan should
be tougher towards China
JAPAN’S most popular politician has called for a boycott of the
Beijing Olympic Games and urged his Government to fight a Falklands-
style “minor war” if China attempts to occupy disputed islands
claimed by both countries.
The remarks of Shintaro Ishihara, the right-wing Governor of Tokyo, in
an interview with The Times, will further inflame tensions that led to
violent anti-Japanese demonstrations in China in April.
There is growing pessimism among Japanese people about their future
relationship with China, and a hardening of attitudes towards their
vast and increasingly powerful neighbour.
Mr Ishihara is notorious for his extreme nationalist views, but
recently he topped a newspaper poll of the politicians Japanese would
most like to be their Prime Minister. A separate poll found that three
quarters of Japanese were “worried” about the 2008 Olympics, given
the hostility in China. Japan’s football team was booed ferociously
during international games played there last year.
“The reason I speak of a boycott is because of the recent football
games, and the trouble that was caused on that occasion,” Mr Ishihara
said in his 45-storey headquarters in Tokyo. “I think that the
Olympics in Beijing have the same significance in international
politics as Hitler’s Olympics in Berlin in 1936. It was a
demonstration against the background of military power. Beijing is
hoping to show the same kind of posture.”
Nobutaka Machimura, the Japanese Foreign Minister, was recently forced
to deny rumours of a boycott when he met his Chinese counterpart in New
York.
The demonstrations in April, during which the Japanese Consulate in
Shanghai was stoned by an angry crowd, were sparked by controversy over
a Japanese school history textbook that skates over the more brutal
aspects of the wartime occupation of China. Japan’s newly revived
campaign to gain a permanent seat on the UN Security Council has also
stirred up resentful anger.
The most troubling long-term problem, however, is the competition
between the two countries over territorial rights and the natural
resources that come with them.
Mr Ishihara recently sailed to a distant reef known as Okinotorishima,
over which Tokyo and Beijing are at odds. China insists that because
the reef supports no life and is almost entirely covered at high tide
it is a rock, which brings no right to the surrounding sea. Japan
asserts that it is an island, and claims the surrounding maritime
economic zone. The Governor, 72, was filmed kissing a plaque on the
territory and swimming around it in a wetsuit, admiring its tropical
fish.
Mr Ishihara has also been a vocal champion of Japan’s ownership of
islands known as the Senkaku in Japanese and as the Diaoyu in China. “
I would have Japanese soldiers stationed there, or Japanese residents
living there, but the Ministry of Foreign Affairs prohibits this,” he
said. “If there is a flashpoint there, I would not hesitate to fight a
minor war to protect our own territory ? like you did in the Falkland
Islands.”
Mr Ishihara abandoned national politics ten years ago and his position
as Tokyo’s Governor gives him little opportunity to put his alarming
ideas into practice ? but his outspokenness and indifference to
criticism have won him remarkable popularity. In last month’s poll in
the bestselling Yomiuri Shimbun, 31 per cent of respondents named him
as their choice as prime minister. The incumbent, Junichiro Koizumi,
managed 16 per cent.
“Looking back over history, China has never had an equal partner,” Mr
Ishihara said recently. “It has either paid homage, or annexed another
country. This is something we should take to heart. Looking at those
childish and stupid demonstrations, many Japanese must have realised
the true nature of that country.
“It is an honour for me to continue playing the role of ‘the most
notorious Japanese’.”
