MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION
INFORMATION AND PRESS DEPARTMENT
Concerning the Fate of Japanese Journalist Kosuke Tsuneoka
2001-09-24
Neither the Federal Security Service (FSB) nor the Federal Border Service of Russia has any information on the whereabouts of Japanese journalist Kosuke Tsuneoka, officials of these Russian agencies have reported.
According to media reports, 32-year-old Kosuke Tsuneoka last communicated at the end of July this year. He told his friend the military journalist in Tokyo Kenjiro Kato that he wanted to move from Georgia on to the territory of Chechnya in order to have a talk with Chechen gunmen.
Whereupon the journalist intended by August 15 to return to Georgia.
Available information shows that the Japanese journalist had for a long time worked in Moscow, and about two months ago went to Georgia. FSB believes it is precisely in Georgia that the traces of Kosuke Tsuneoka should be searched for.
Russian officials have repeatedly declared that Chechen terrorists have found refuge in the Pankisi Gorge on Georgian territory.
