By: Muhammad Abu Nasr on: 30.11.2004 [05:26 ]

Monday, 29 November 2004.

Al-Fallujah.

Iraqi Red Crescent relief convoys make their way to al-Fallujah to aid population, despite US obstruction.

An official spokesman for the Iraqi Red Crescent reported that the IRC sent three relief convoys into al-Fallujah on Monday. The convoys carried medical and nutritional materials, blankets and bedspreads in order to give the residents of the city some protection against the intense cold that strikes Iraq at this time of year.

Firdaws al-‘Ibadi told Mafkarat al-Islam in Baghdad that the IRC also opened two centers inside al-Fallujah, the first in the al-Hadrah Mosque, and the second in the home of Shaykh Khalaf ash-Shadid al-‘Isawi located in the ash-Shurtah neighborhood. Nutritional supplies that are sent into the city will be available in those two centers.

Al-‘Ibadi said that volunteers working in the two centers began on Sunday to provided three warm meals a day to the civilian residents of the city. The meals are provided in the centers and residents may come to the centers to get them and take them home. Additionally, the three Red Crescent cars in the city will be delivering some meals.

US forces, however, have refused to allow meals to be delivered to the homes of al-Fallujah residents, out of fear that some of the food might reach Resistance fighters defending the city. Some sources in the city report that there are 150 families blockaded inside the city, but other sources say the number of civilians still there is higher. Some of those persons have not been able to leave the city since their relatives were killed in the course of the first US offensive on the city some eight moths ago.

Meanwhile, Isma‘il Saqr, the Director of the Iraqi Red Crescent, announced that a fourth relief convoy would be sent into the city tomorrow (Tuesday).

Firdaws al-‘Ibadi said that the IRC would be sending three convoys into the city every week beginning next week. She also said that upon their request, 17 persons had been evacuated to Baghdad on Red Crescent vehicles. She said that the Red Crescent had requested that pregnant women of al-Fallujah come to the IRC centers so that they can be evacuated to Baghdad where they can receive proper medical attention.

The correspondents of Mafkarat al-Islam report that the number of al-Fallujah residents who have left the city number 1,200 families now staying in al-Habbaniyah; 250 families in al-Halabisah and al-Bu ‘Alwan; 400 families in as-Saqlawiyah; 155 families in al-Majar; 3,500 families in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah the scene of fierce fighting itself on Sunday-Monday night; all these in addition to the crowds of refugee families in Baghdad and al-Karmah. There, in one house alone, 12 families were staying, i.e., 80 people, inside a very old home with an area of 250 square meters. Their already tragic condition has only been made worse by the intense cold that has settled into the area. The populations of the predominantly Sunni areas of Baghdad, Mosul, and ar-Ramadi have made special efforts to collect food for the refugee families as well as means to protect them against the cold.

US allows al-Fallujah residents or four hours to bury bodies, but bans as-Saqlawiyah residents from burying their dead.

In a dispatch posted at 6:45pm Monday (5:45pm Mecca time) Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US forces in al-Fallujah had permitted the city’s residents at last to bury the bodies of their dead. They prohibited the burial of the dead in as-Saqlawiyah, however, where al-Fallujah’s victims had earlier been interred, because of what the Americans said was a security situation there that was “out of control.”

US forces gave al-Fallujah residents four hours starting at 8 o’clock and ending at 12 o’clock to bury their relatives, but promised that American snipers would shoot them dead if they ventured out outside that four-hour window.

Al-Fallujah’s residents set about burying their dead among the “islands” that divide the streets of the ravished city, in the back yards of houses, and in any open ground. The bodies were badly decomposing having been left for days outside without attention as American snipers shot any person who ventured out of his house.

US forces had brought in workers from the an-Nasr as-Salam area between al-Fallujah and Baghdad to load dead bodies in potato coolers and other refrigerators. The workers also deposited the bodies of dead “national guard” puppet troops in the same coolers. American Chinook helicopters evacuated American dead but left the corpses of their allies, the Iraqi puppet troops behind.

Although bodies have been lying in the streets of as-Saqlawiyah for nine days now, US troops have not permitted the people there to bury the dead, claiming that the security situation there is “out of control” and that the city is full of what the invaders call “terrorists.”

Al-Fallujah Resistance forces, now joined by hundreds of Iraqi fighters from other cities, hold 70 percent of al-Fallujah as Americans build barricades to try to stem their steady advance.

In a dispatch posted at 12:50pm Monday local time (11:50am Mecca time) the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported from al-Fallujah that more than 100 Iraqi Resistance fighters had managed to get into the defiant city to join up with hundreds of other Resistance fighters who had flooded into the city in recent days and joined the ranks of the city’s defenders.

The correspondent noted that the US presence in al-Fallujah has now become limited, as the Resistance controls more than 70 percent of the city. This is particularly true now, after Resistance fighters from ar-Ramadi joined up with the fighters inside al-Fallujah. The fighters of ar-Ramadi are known for their expertise in street warfare and war of attrition.

US forces, for their part, have erected barricades between demolished walls in the al-Jaghifi and al-Jawlan neighborhoods to try to prevent the further advance of Resistance fighters, after the Americans encountered increasing difficulty in withdrawing from the city or even getting around within it. Once again US troops closed the new bridge that links al-Fallujah with the tourist area, but the Americans were unable to close the old bridge which remains open, but unsafe.

US forces continue pull-out from al-Fallujah as Resistance mounts attacks on retreating Americans.

In a dispatch posted at 12:20pm Monday local time (11:20am Mecca time) Mafkarat al-Islam’s correspondent reported that US columns were still trying to withdraw from the city of al-Fallujah as Resistance fighters continued to inflict losses on the Americans.

At about 2:15pm Sunday, US forces began again to withdraw columns from al-Fallujah, in an operation that lasted until late Sunday night. Mafkarat al-Islam’s correspondents in al-Azraqiyah to the west of al-Fallujah, and in al-‘Amiriyah saw fires burning on those American columns, as they passed along the road to the US base in al-Habbaniyah, indicating that the Resistance was continuing to ambush the convoys as they tried to get out of town.

US indiscriminately shells al-Fallujah neighborhoods on Sunday-Monday night.

US occupation forces on Sunday night opened fire indiscriminately on several neighborhoods in al-Fallujah, including the ash-Shuhada’ and al-Jubayl neighborhoods inside the city. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the fighting broke out near the al-Jubayl neighborhood where light arms and mortar fire could be heard.

The combat, however, did not last long, and then calm came to prevail over the neighborhoods.

Numerous civilians have been returning to al-Fallujah, an indication that the US troops have not managed to gain control of the situation inside the city. US indiscriminate fire in the al-Wahdah, al-Jumhuriyah, and al-Jawlan neighborhoods are further proof that the US forces are no longer present in those areas which have now fallen into the hands of the Resistance.

US shells house in al-Karmah, killing 15 civilians.

US forces shelled one of the houses in city of al-Karmah at about 2pm Monday, local time, according to the local Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent. The attack left 15 persons, including women and children, dead.

‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah:

Bloody Anglo-American offensive targets civilians, refugees with cluster bombs, trying to halt attacks on the rear of US forces in nearby al-Fallujah.

US, British forces launch waves of attacks on ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah all Sunday-Monday night to try to wipe out Resistance fighters harrying US rear lines.

The area east of ‘Amiriyah al-Falluja near the area designated Project 102 saw violent fighting between US and British aggressor units on the one hand and Resistance forces starting at 10pm Sunday night. The combat was still under way when the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent filed a report on the fighting that was posted at 11:55am Monday morning local time (10:55am Mecca time).

In a dispatch posted at 6:40pm Monday night local time (5:40pm Mecca time) Mafkarat al-Islam reported that fighting was still continuing intermittently in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah.

The US and British had massed more than 200 Abrams tanks, Bradley armored vehicles and other vehicles in addition to 150 Humvees backed by helicopters and fighter aircraft. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that the invader troops were trying to wipe out the Resistance in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah, where their attacks were inflicting losses on the rear lines of the US troops surrounding the city of al-Fallujah to the north. The invaders were therefore engaged in launching wave after wave of attacks on the Resistance fighters in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah.

Monday night: fighting continues east of ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah as Americans run into problems.

In a dispatch posted at 11:05pm local time Monday night (10:05pm Mecca time) Mafkarat al-Islam reported that battles continued east of ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah. The correspondent in the area reported that the zone of combat extends from ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah to 13km to the east, and that there is particularly intense fighting in the area of al-‘Ujayr village, 10km east of al-Fallujah. Fighting in those areas has continued since Monday morning, the correspondent reported, but grew more intense after sunset.

Resistance fighters have used various types of rockets - including the Grad, Tariq, large and small Katyusha - in addition to 60mm, 62mm, and 120mm mortars, and C5K rockets. From 6pm to 7pm local time, the Resistance fired more than 15 Tariq and Grad rockets at the US attackers.

The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent personally saw three US Marine Humvees totally destroyed. He also saw a destroyed British Land Cruiser. The correspondent wrote that he saw two large US Chinook helicopters land, remain for about half an hour and then take off, leaving the area with dead and/or wounded invader troops. The helicopters also evacuated the wreckage of US Humvees.

US forces are attempting to advance into the area, the correspondent reported, but bombs planted by the Resistance are obstructing their progress and giving them considerable problems. This has prevented the Americans from bringing all their forces into the area of combat, forcing them largely to encircle the area only. For its part, the Resistance has managed to make the center of the fighting far from the US troops, increasing their problems as they have to pass through agricultural farms and fields where they are subject to frequent direct Resistance ambushes.

The American forces have also not been able to make much use of their helicopter gunships in the fighting in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah - an area that has acquired the nickname “helicopter graveyard” because of the skill the local fighters have acquired in hiding in fields and observing and shooting down the American aircraft.

US dumps 10,000 cluster bombs on ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah late Monday.

In a dispatch posted at 11:50pm Monday night local time (10:50pm Mecca time) the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that US aircraft dropped five containerbombs loaded with anti-personnel cluster bombs on ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah on Monday.

The correspondent wrote that US C-130 aircraft dropped in all 10,000 internationally-banned cluster bombs on the city.

US forces meanwhile besieged the al-Fallujah families who had found refuge in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah. The Americans have encircled the residential area where they are and arrested the local Mufti (religious legal consult) Shawkat Ghalib al-‘Ani along with six of his aides.

An official in the puppet so-called “Iraqi national guard” in the al-Ishaqi area of Samarra’ district, 125km north of Baghdad announced that he was resigning from his post along with 30 of the members of his unit in response to the Sunni Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ Scholars ruling that probhibits Muslims from supporting the US occupation authorities in their offensive on al-Fallujah.

It is remembered that in late September another captain in the puppet “national guard” took 200 of his men and resigned after the US offensive on the city of Samarra’.

The Board of Muslim ‘Ulama’ Scholars issued a statement at the start of the US offensive on al-Fallujah on 8 November that said that it was prohibited for Muslims to take part “under the flag of the invader forces who are described as infidels” in the offensive, calling it a major sin that would make God’s wrath inescapable.
