US military personnel arrested for rape in Japan's Okinawa

A member of the United States military was arrested Friday on suspicion of raping a woman after breaking into her home on the southern Japanese island Okinawa, police said.
A 34-year-old man was arrested after police interviewed the victim and neighbors, an Okinawa police spokesman said.

The woman, aged in her 20s, called police immediately after the incident, which occurred in the early hours of August 22, police said.

"He seemed to be a foreign man whom I don't know," she was quoted as saying.

The suspect has denied the allegation, according to a Jiji Press report.

Okinawa has been a source of Japanese anger at the presence of some 40,500 US military personnel in the country, particularly after the 1995 rape of a 12-year-old local girl by three US servicemen.

Tensions heightened after a US military helicopter crashed on the island in August. Some 30,000 people attended a protest rally following the crash, the largest anti-US military demonstration in nearly a decade.

The Japanese foreign ministry's director-general on North American Affairs, Shin Ebihara, Friday said the incident was "extremely regrettable" in a complaint to US officials.

"We strongly request you take disciplinary punishment and prevent a further recurrence," he told US interim charge d'affaires Michael Michalak.

Michalak said US authorities would "cooperate to the fullest extent possible", an official at the embassy in Tokyo said.

US embassy and military public affairs staff said they were trying to confirm the man's identity and position in the military.
