Aziz may have been spy inside Saddam's regime
By Con Coughlin in London

April 28 2003

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/04/27/1051381854146.html

The favourable surrender terms agreed between coalition commanders and Tariq
Aziz has prompted speculation that Saddam Hussein's trusted foreign policy
adviser provided the intelligence responsible for the cruise missile attack on
the Iraqi dictator's bunker in southern Baghdad in the opening salvoes of the
war.

Intelligence officials have said that the information they received that
allowed them to target Saddam came from a "senior official" within the Baath
regime, and as a leading member of the ruling Revolutionary Command Council Mr
Aziz would have known Saddam was planning to hold a meeting at one of his
heavily fortified bunkers.

"You get the feeling, now that Aziz is safely in American custody, that he will
be getting re-acquainted with people he has known for quite some time," said a
former CIA officer who specialises in Iraq.

"The information that enabled the coalition forces to target Saddam in the
opening hours of the war could only have come from someone like Aziz who had
access to Saddam's inner circle."

Saddam's security chiefs placed members of Mr Aziz's family under arrest
shortly before the invasion to make sure that the former deputy prime minister
did not defect to the West.

Concern about the fate of his family - in particular his eldest son - was Mr
Aziz's primary concern during the lengthy negotiations that finally resulted in
his decision to give himself up at the end of last week.

"Tariq was still terrified of what the remnants of Saddam's regime would do to
his family if he surrendered to us," a Western security officer said. "Even if
Saddam were dead, he knew that there were still Baath party loyalists who would
want to exact revenge on his family."

As part of Mr Aziz's surrender terms, coalition commanders agreed to place his
immediate family under the equivalent of protective custody to ensure that they
were safe from revenge attacks by Saddam loyalists.

At the end of last week, President George Bush said he believed Saddam had
either been killed or critically injured in the March 20 attack, and paid
tribute to the "brave soul" who provided the intelligence that enabled the
attack to take place. Asked if the Iraqi spy was still alive, Mr Bush replied:
"Yes he is. He is with us. Thank God."

When, shortly after the war started, Washington dropped heavy hints that Mr
Aziz had defected, he appeared before journalists in Baghdad angrily denouncing
the claims, saying he would rather die than be taken into custody by the
Americans.

Iraq's Aziz Helped Identify Saddam, Official Says
Sun December 14, 2003 09:02 AM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's former Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz, in U.S.
custody for seven months, helped to confirm the identity of Saddam Hussein
after his capture, an official with the U.S.-led administration said Sunday.
"He was identified with the help of Tareq Aziz," the official, who spoke on
condition of anonymity, told Reuters. He did not elaborate.

The fugitive dictator was dusty, bearded and apparently exhausted when he
was found in a narrow hiding hole during a raid on a farm near his home town
Tikrit late Saturday.

Aziz, who surrendered to U.S. forces after the Iraqi president was toppled
in April, has been held at the Baghdad airport.

Aziz, once a close aide of Saddam, also helped U.S. forces confirm the
identity of the ousted leader's two sons, Uday and Qusay, after they were
killed by American soldiers in July.

CONFUSION OVER AZIZ CLAIMS

Tariq Aziz's son has denied a claim Iraq's former deputy prime minister has died in US custody.

Arab news station al Arabiya had reported Saddam Hussein's former number two had died.

But both Ziad Aziz and the US military insisted the captive was alive and in good health.

Al Arabiya had quoted sources in the International Committee of the Red Cross for its story.

The charity said it had no reports of his death, but fellow Arabic channel al Jazeera claimed the Vatican had also confirmed the death of committed Christian Aziz.

However, a spokesman for the US-led prisons authority in Iraq said: "I can confirm that Tariq Aziz is alive.

"There is no change in his status and he is in our custody."

Tariq Azis was one of the most prominent and most public figures of Saddam's old regime.

He regularly appeared on television promoting the Iraqi leader during both conflicts.

In April last year, the longest-serving member of Saddam's regime surrendered to Coalition custody.

US denies Tariq Aziz died in custody
October 10, 2004

Baghdad: The US military said on Saturday it had "absolute confirmation" that Tariq Aziz, Iraq's former deputy prime minister, was still alive.

"I can absolutely confirm that he is still alive," Lieutenant Colonel Barry Johnson, spokesman for detainee operations in Iraq, told Reuters.

He was speaking after media reports that Aziz had died in US custody.

Colonel Johnson said rumours first surfaced on Friday that Aziz, who also once served as Iraq's foreign minister under Saddam Hussein, had died in jail. He said those rumours were investigated and found to be baseless.

"The reports are untrue. There is no change to his status," he said. "Tariq Aziz is alive and well."

Aziz's son, Ziad, also denied the rumours, contacting a French monk and friend of the family, Jean Marie Benjamin, from Amman to say his father was still alive, Italy's Ansa news agency added.

Benjamin is understood to have good contacts with the family who are Iraqi Christians.

In recent months it was reported that Aziz had suffered a recurrence of long-term heart problems.

Aziz, who was born in 1936, surrendered to US forces in April last year, shortly after Saddam was toppled.

A Christian, Aziz was seen as the smooth-talking face of Saddam's government. He was number 25 on the US military's list of the 55 most-wanted Iraqis.

He appeared in court in July this year along with 10 other of Saddam's senior lieutenants. They were all accused of killings during the former president's rule and are expected to be tried in the coming months.

Aziz and other so-called high-value detainees, including Saddam, are being held at a secret, high-security camp believed to be near to Baghdad's airport.

Tariq Aziz death rumors may be part of trial deal

10/10/2004 KurdishMedia.com

New York (KurdishMedia.com) 10 October 2004: According to Iraqi sources, the recently reported and subsequently refuted rumors of the death of former Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz may be part of a larger story relating to the trial of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Sources indicate that the rumors of Aziz’ death are a way of spreading news of his true poor condition of health. These rumors, some say, are being spread as prelude to the revealing of a deal that Tariq Aziz has made with authorities that will be trying Saddam Hussein. Aziz will supposedly be treated with leniency in deference to his poor health and future testimony against Saddam Hussein.

Additionally, Mohammed Hamza al-Zubadi, former head of the northern bureau of Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath Party, may be testifying against Saddam Hussein.

Tariq Aziz, a Christian born in Mosul by the name Michael Yuhanna, was the public face of Saddam Hussein’s regime, frequently meeting with foreign dignitaries and journalists. Aziz’ association with Saddam Hussein began in the 1950’s and lasted until the fall of the regime and surrendered to American forces in Iraq on April 24, 2003. The recent reports of Aziz’ death are the second such rumors.

Immediately prior to the war that eliminated the Ba’athist regime, on March 19, 2003, rumors spread that Aziz was shot by Iraqi regime loyalists.

Confusion over ousted Iraqi deputy PM Tariq Aziz's Death
Pakistan Times Monitoring Report

BAGHDAD (Iraq): An Arab TV channel has claimed that the former Iraqi deputy prime minister and former foreign minister Tariq Aziz has died under U.S. custody however US officials in Baghdad have contradicted these reports and have said that Tariq Aziz is still alive.

Arab TV while quoting the International Red Cross said that relatives of Tariq Aziz who was suffering from different diseases, said that the U.S. army informed them that the condition of Tariq Aziz is not stable.

Arab TV has claimed that Vatican City sources have confirmed the death of Tariq Aziz however US army spokesman in Baghdad Berry Johnson has termed this report by Arab TV as false. Johnson said “Tariq Aziz is in our custody and he is alive”.

●●Tareq Aziz son denies father's Death

And in Rome, a son of Iraq's former deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz under Saddam Hussein told a contact Saturday his father was alive, denying television reports of his death, the Italian news agency Ansa said.

The son, Ziad, confirmed to a French monk and friend of the family, Jean Marie Benjamin, in Amman that his father was still alive, Ansa added.

Benjmain is understood to have good contacts with the family who are Iraqi Christians. Benjamin was in Amman with Ziad and his family when the report of the death appeared.

Contacted by the news agency in Amman, Benjamin said: "Ziad personally got in touch with Baghdad where the news of his father's death was denied."

Benjamin represents a religious foundation at Assisi in Italy. He organised a trip by Tareq Aziz to Rome in 2003, when Aziz was received by Pope John Paul II, on the eve of the US-led invasion of Iraq

●●Rumsfeld for more troops in Iraq

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld gathered 18 coalition defense ministers on this aircraft carrier in the Gulf Saturday to discuss strategy in Iraq and reassure them that progress is being made against insurgents.

In the cramped "war room" of the Kennedy, the ministers heard General George Casey, the US commander in Iraq, in a video teleconference from Baghdad lay out his plan for retaking control of Iraq's violence-torn provinces.

"Casey gave a brief on the the state of play in Iraq, the way forward and where we are," said Larry DiRita, a Pentagon spokesman who attended most of the briefing.

The general told the ministers that 145,000 Iraqi security forces will be "fully manned, trained and equipped" before the elections, said another senior defense official who also attended.

According to that official, Casey said the violence now centered on four of Iraq's 18 provinces, including Baghdad and Al-Anbar, a province west of Baghdad where insugents have gained control over a number of towns and cities.

In the other 14 provinces, attacks have subsided to four a day, the official cited Casey as saying.

The New York Times reported this week that Casey's plan identifies 20 to 30 towns as controlled by insurgents or vulnerable, and establishes metrics to judge when force should be used to bring them under the government's control.●
