US plans to raise official troop level in Iraq to 160,000 men by early 2005.
The American newspaper USA Today disclosed on Tuesday that the Pentagon, clearly aware that it urgently needs more troops as it faces an overwhelming rise in Resistance activity, is fearful that Eurpoean allies of Washington will not be willing to jump aboard America’s sinking ship in Iraq. That poses the US military the problem of increasing American occupation troop strength with more US soldiers.
USA Today wrote that “Pentagon officials are considering increasing the current U.S. force by delaying the departures of some U.S. troops now in Iraq and accelerating the deployment of others scheduled to go there next year.” The US military seek to use the American-staged theatrics of a so-called “Iraqi election” in January 2005 as a cover for an increase in US troop strength in the country. Thus, USA Today claimed that “the goal is to temporarily raise the number of U.S. troops in Iraq from the current 138,000 to almost 160,000 to help protect international and Iraqi election workers and secure polling locations.”
The American paper reported that the easiest option, according to Defense Department officials who insisted that their names be kept secret, was “to delay the departure from Iraq of the 1st Cavalry Division, which is set to begin leaving in January. At the same time, the Pentagon would move up the deployment of some elements of the Army’s 3rd Division.” The paper said “other options include using US troops now being held in reserve in Kuwait or deploying elements of the Army’s 82nd Airborne,” which took part in the occupation of Afghanistan during the staged “elections” there earlier this month.
