BLAIR'S PLEDGE TO FAMILY
Tony Blair has reassured the family of British hostage Ken Bigley that the Government is "doing whatever we can" to try to secure his release.
But for Mr Bigley's mother, Lil, the agony is proving too much. The 86-year-old has been taken to hospital for a second time this week.
On Thursday, Mrs Bigley received hospital treatment for stress just hours after she made a plea for her son to be released.
Former Beirut hostage Terry Waite was with her in her house when she was taken ill for the second time.
Mr Waite, who was on a private visit to offer his support, described the family as "remarkable" and praised Mrs Bigley's strength of character.
Earlier, the Prime Minister who is in Brighton for the Labour Party Conference, said: "We have been in touch with the Bigley family and I think everyone is amazed at how dignified they have been over the last few days
"We will continue to do whatever we can," he added.
Mr Bigley was captured last Thursday in Baghdad, along with two American colleagues who have since been beheaded.
A British Muslim delegation has arrived in Baghdad to urge Iraqi religious leaders to put pressure on the Briton's captors.
The Muslim community in Britain has rallied round the Bigley family to appeal to the kidnappers to free the 62-year-old engineer.
Dr Daud Abdullah and Dr Musharraf Hussain, of the Muslim Council of Britain, have vowed to seek common ground with Mr Bigley's captors and remind them that Islam is a religion of mercy.
However, they said they do not intend to raise false hopes - describing their visit as a "humanitarian gesture".
