Anti-terror squads to police Asia
September 20, 2004 - 8:30AM
Prime Minister John Howard will today release a $100-million
plan to boost Australia's ability to combat terrorism in
the region, using flying squads of Australian Federal Police
that could be sent to neighbouring countries.
Under the five-year plan, to be released in Darwin today,
six new police teams would be set up, two specialising in
high-tech surveillance, two focusing on counter terrorism
intelligence and a further two including terrorism
investigators and experts in tracking financial dealings.
One team would be based in Indonesia, one in an unspecified
Asian country and the remainder in Australia.
The teams could be flown into countries at short notice,
with the approval of those countries.
Mr Howard's plan also includes a new unit within the AFP
to ensure officers with counter terrorism training also
have foreign language skills.
The coalition has been under pressure from Labor over
its focus on Iraq, at the expense of the security of
the region.
The move come as a new poll shows the coalition still
holds the lead over Labor on the question of who could
better protect Australia against terrorism.
An ACNielsen poll, published in today's The Sydney
Morning Herald newspaper, found 37 per cent of respondents
thought Australia would feel safer against terrorism under
a Howard government, while 31 per cent chose Labor.
The poll also gives the coalition the lead -- 46 per cent
to Labor's 39 per cent -- on the question of which party's
policies overall would be better for Australia.
