Israel: Militants Using UN Van
Oct. 2 - The Israeli army released film showing what it claimed as Palestinian militants placing a rocket in the back of a U.N. van.
The Israeli army on Saturday (October 2) released film showing what it claimed as Palestinian militants placing a makeshift Qassam rocket in the back of a van clearly marked with the letters 'U.N.' on its roof. Israel says the aerial footage was filmed over the north Gaza Strip during the major offensive currently underway in which 45 Palestinians and three Israelis have died over three days of fighting in the area.
Peter Hansen, commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, told Reuters from Gaza that he would still need to see the footage before he could make a definitive comment, but said ambulance staff would be interviewed. "We have to investigate this very thoroughly, this is very serious and we ask the (Israeli) army to provide us with all the information that can be made available," said Hansen who heads the body which provides aid to Palestinians.
"We are interpreting this is the light of earlier allegations of misuse of U.N. ambulances which turned to be false allegations (by Israel) but we have to see very carefully whether this could be a true and fair interpretation for which we do not yet have evidence," Hansen said.
Israel condemned the use of the U.N. vehicles for transporting weapons saying it was unacceptable. "Again we see the terror organizations use international vehicles and symbols to carry out attacks and launch rockets on Israeli civilians," Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said. "This is against all recognized rules of war and it shows what we are up against, and how difficult it is to fight the terror organizations who will stop at nothing," he continued.
Saturday's accusation is the latest by Israel against the U.N. which has in the past denied its workers have collaborated with Palestinian militants.
Last May Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz accused Palestinian militants of using U.N. ambulances to spirit away some of the remains of Israeli soldiers killed during a Gaza City raid. UNRWA later said it failed to find evidence to support Israel's accusation.
Forty five Palestinians and three Israelis have died during three days of fighting which are the deadliest three days in the area since a Palestinian uprising erupted in September 2000.
