US to provide military aid to Georgia

TBILISI - Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has agreed with US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to prolong the ongoing program of providing US military aid to Georgia at a meeting in Washington, Georgian Rustavi television reported. In 2003 the US allocated $64m for the program aimed at training and advising Georgian servicemen. They helped to train 6 Georgian battalions in accordance with NATO standards.

Saakashvili and Rumsfeld have also addressed the issue of construction of the Baku-Tbilisi Ceyhan pipeline. Earlier Georgia halted the construction of the pipeline because of certain violations of norms by British Petroleum, which operates the project.

Saakashivili is now paying his non-official visit to the US. He is to meet US State Secretary Colin Powell and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.
