Ayatollah Al-Sistani Calls All Iraqis To Najaf To Defend The City

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has called for all Iraqis to march to Najaf to defend the war torn city and the Iman Ali Mosque.
Al-Sistani will return from London, where he has been receiving medical treatment, to Iraq within hours. He is asking all Iraqis to "march to Najaf in order to rescue the city" and to stand by for further instructions.
According to a spokesman for al-Sistani, the widely respected Shi'ite cleric would not have traveled to London for medical treatment had he known events on the ground would decline so drastically. He is said to be leaving London against the recommendation of his physicians.
Sayed Mohamed Musawi, a close aide to Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani said in an interview with the BBC in London broadcast today "Americans interfering in this will not help the situation at all. We always say that the Americans should be very far from the holy places. They should not involve themselves in this problem." He added any US involvement in a raid on the shrine would boost public support for Iraqi resistance groups. Any raid by U.S. troops on Iraq's holiest Shi'ite Muslim shrine would trigger mass protests and Musawi said it would be "very bad" if U.S. troops were to damage the mosque.
U.S. troops have done most of the fighting in Najaf but today, US-led and trained Iraqi security forces, backed by U.S. aircraft, entered the battle zone for the first time. The US military remains the striking force, with the fledgling Iraqi army serving as window dressing in an effort to portray Iraqi support the US incursion into the city.
Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is expected to make a statement later today.
