イスラエルテレビなど複数のメディアは２４日、同国のシャロン首相の不正資金疑惑を捜査していたマズーズ検事総長が、証拠不十分として首相を不起訴処分にする方針を固めたと報じた。法務省は「最終決定は出されていない」との声明を出した。
疑惑は、イスラエルの開発業者＝起訴＝がギリシャでの観光開発事業への口利きを期待して、シャロン首相の息子を形式的なコンサルタントに雇い、給料など数十万ドルが首相側に流れたというもの。首相が資金のわいろ性を認識していたかどうかが焦点だった。
捜査に当たった主任検事（現最高裁判事）は起訴相当の意見を検事総長に提出したが、検事総長を含む捜査チームが、首相の有罪を維持できるだけの十分な証拠が見つからないと判断したという。イスラエルテレビによると、検事総長は６月１５日までに最終処分を発表する。

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz is tilting toward closing the file on the so-called "Greek island" affair, rather than going ahead with prosecuting Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for bribery, sources close to the legal team Mazuz appointed to examine the evidence said Monday night.
But the sources emphasized that Mazuz has neither made a decision, "nor is he close to a decision," which is expected to be made by mid-June. The attorney general is now devoting all his time to the Sharon case and personally examining all the evidence.

For that reason, during his meetings with the lawyers, Mazuz points to lacunae and problems in the indictment - playing gadfly and raising questions that would come up in a trial.
The problem with the case, say legal sources, is not merely the prime minister's "criminal thinking" that would have to be determined in any case, but also how much of the evidence in the case is circumstantial.
Justice Ministry sources said that in cases based on circumstantial evidence, all the pieces have to fall neatly into place. "All it takes is one piece not to fit and the whole thing can be punctured," said the source.
In addition, court rulings have said that in circumstantial cases, all the evidence must point to one inescapable conclusion. If the evidence can be explained in a different way, reasonable doubt exists.
So far, Mazuz appears to be inclined toward reasonable doubt. Therefore the speculation centers on how he will decide to close the case - although the ministry sources are careful to point out that he is continuing to study the material.
In addition, there is still material that the so-called Mazuz team wants to see before making a decision, and not all that material has reached them. There is no consensus or uniformity of opinion in the Mazuz team - some members believe there is enough evidence to convict.
