Bush Wants Rumsfeld to Stay as Pentagon Chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush wants Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to stay in his job, the White House said on Thursday, a day after aides said Bush had privately expressed annoyance over the Pentagon chief's handling of the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.

Asked at a news briefing whether Bush wanted Rumsfeld to remain as head of the Defense Department, White House press secretary Scott McClellan replied: "Absolutely. The president greatly appreciates the job that Secretary Rumsfeld is doing."

The remark came amid growing speculation that Rumsfeld could be forced to step down over an Iraqi prisoner scandal that analysts say has further damaged American credibility in the Middle East.

The issue prompted Bush to grant interviews to two Arab-language television channels on Wednesday in an attempt to contain international outrage over the reports.

In his interview with the U.S.-backed Alhurra television, the president appeared to offer lukewarm support for the defense secretary.

"Of course I've got some confidence in the secretary of defense, and I've got confidence in the commanders on the ground in Iraq," Bush said.

After the interviews, aides to the president said Bush was dissatisfied with Rumsfeld's handling of prisoner abuse issue in Iraq. The aides said Bush had complained to Rumsfeld for not fully alerting him to the details.
