Community Mourns Local Man Beheaded In Iraq
Beheading Called Revenge For Iraqi Prisoner Abuse

WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- A Chester County community is mourning after hearing that a local man was beheaded in Iraq.
Family members fell to the ground outside their West Chester home Tuesday after learning a video of Nick Berg's killing was on the Internet.
They were informed Monday by the State Department that he had been decapitated, but had been trying to keep that from becoming public knowledge.
"They're grieving really hard," family spokesman Bruce Hauser said.
Berg, 26, identified himself on the video, (pictured, left) saying he was from Philadelphia.
"My name is Nick Berg, my father's name is Michael, my mother's name is Suzanne," he said on the video before being killed. "I have a brother and sister, David and Sara. I live in ... Philadelphia."
Moments later, he was beheaded by a group of militants.
Berg's father, Michael Berg, blames the U.S. government for creating circumstances that led to his son's death. In addition to the war itself, which Michael Berg opposes, he contends that the U.S. military held his son illegally from March 24 to April 6. He said if his son hadn't been detained for so long, he might have been able to leave the country before the violence worsened.
The al-Qaida affiliated group that killed Berg said the action is revenge for the Iraqi prisoner abuse.

Rep. James Gerlach showed up at the family's West Chester home Tuesday. The family has asked the government to release Berg's body.
“There really are no words to describe this unfathomable brutality. I think it is a barbaric atrocity of the highest magnitude. Whatever it takes, the civilized world is going to have to bring these brutal assassins to justice,” Sen. Arlen Specter said
"Those who've seen the tape on TV have described it as revolting and sickening. I will describe it as an outrage to the civilized world," Sen. Rick Santorum said.
Gov. Ed Rendell called the killing horrific and inhumane.
"Our deepest sympathies to the Berg family and it just seems so senseless that an American who went over there to help rebuild,” Rendell said.
Rendell also said that Berg's captors misread the America people if they think this will cause our troops to leave.
Community members said they are shocked and saddened by the death of Berg, who was working as a civilian contractor in Iraq.
"I just can't believe that anybody could do that to another human being, for whatever your cause is," neighbor Jeff George said.
"Today the Iraqi war has come home to the West Chester community and the West Chester Area School District in a profound way," West Chester Superintendent Alan Elko said.
Berg had been trying to get home when he was captured and finally killed.
Berg owned a small business that worked with communication equipment like radio towers. His family said he traveled to Iraq independently to help rebuild its infrastructure. His family said Berg had traveled several times to Third World countries to help spread technology.

His friends at the West Chester Area YMCA said Berg worked out several times a week, that he was interested in power lifting and that he was always ready with a joke.
