Israeli soldiers killed during Gaza raid
Tuesday 11 May 2004, 11:27 Makka Time, 8:27 GMT
The military wing of the Hamas resistance movement has claimed responsibility for the death of six Israeli occupation soldiers in Gaza City.
In a telephone call to Aljazeera, Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades said it had blown up an Israeli military personnel carrier on Tuesday using an explosive device.
Other reports say a bomb exploded under the vehicle, in the south of Gaza City.
Islamic Jihad's al-Quds Brigades also informed Aljazeera it had damaged an Israeli tank earlier on Tuesday in the same area. Witnesses said they saw injured Israeli soldiers inside the military vehicle.
The attacks follow an Israeli military raid, backed by helicopter gunships and tanks, into al-Zaitun quarter of the city.
At least four Palestinians have now been killed and more than 70 injured, including children, reports Aljazeera's correspondent, quoting hospital sources.
The correspondent said Ammar Jirjawi of Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades was killed while attempting to plant an explosive device targeting military vehicles. Two others killed were identified as Fadi Nassir and Muhammad Faraj Adas.
Serious casualties
A hospital spokesman told Aljazeera at least seven of the injured were in a serious condition. Some had undergone operations to have their legs amputated, reported the correspondent. Others had lost their eyes.
The number of casualties are expected to rise, reports the correspondent, as ambulances were still heard ferrying victims to hospitals.
A military occupation spokesman said Israeli forces were searching for Qassam rocket workshops in case of future raids on illegal settlements in the occupied Gaza Strip.
But locals said fierce battles erupted when troops sped into the quarter in jeeps, civilian taxis and tanks and forced their way into numerous buildings to set up rooftop observation posts.
The spokesman confirmed the army had used explosives to force entry into several buildings, but in a move to surround homes belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad resistance fighters.
Raid continues
Meanwhile, the raid continues in al-Zaitun, Aljazeera's correspondent added. Israeli helicopters are still flying overhead while tanks in the Netzarim settlement opened fire at Palestinian citizens.
Israeli occupation soldiers have taken up positions on rooftops at al-Zaitun, shooting at every moving object, the correspondent reports. They are, however, facing resistance.
Late on Monday, Israeli forces raided the Brazil and Zurub areas of Rafah. Several homes were destroyed and others damaged by Israeli tank fire, reports the correspondent.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who is preparing an amended unilateral Gaza pullout plan after his original proposal was voted down by his right-wing Likud party on 2 May, has vowed to continue to strike against resistance groups.
