Blasts rock Syrian capital
Tuesday 27 April 2004, 22:55 Makka Time, 19:55 GMT
Several blasts followed by a heavy exchange of gunfire have shaken the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Aljazeera reports that the explosions late on Tuesday, apparently caused by grenades, occurred in a district housing several Western and Arab diplomatic offices, such as the Canadian, Saudi and Iranian embassies as well as the residence of the British ambassador.
An unnamed Syrian official told Aljazeera that a shootout occurred between "members of a terror group who randomly opened fire in the area" and Syrian security forces. Security police now say they have the area under their control.
Reuters news agency quotes a foreign student studying in Damascus as saying: "We were working in the library and heard lots of gunfire and explosions. Everyone was terrified and we ran out of the building to see what was happening."
"We saw some big puffs of smoke, but things are closed off now," he added.
Syrian security says three of attackers were killed in an exchange of gunfire.
A Syrian political analyst, Dr Imad Fawzi Shuaibi, told Aljazeera that one of the attackers who was injured in the shootout, has been detained.
Despite numerous news flashes from Damascus, a clear picture has yet to emerge.
The United Nations building in the city is reported to be on fire and at least three cars have been destroyed.
The targets and motive for the attack have still not been disclosed.
