Fallujah elders seek UN intervention
AP/Reuters
Baghdad: Town elders from the Iraqi insurgent bastion of Fallujah have
written to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan asking him to mediate
between militants and US troops to maintain a troubled truce, a
spokesman said yesterday.
They also urged Annan to set up an international investigation into
the US-led occupation of Iraq, the spokesman added.
The request came as a roadside bomb struck a US military convoy on the
outskirts of the besieged town, destroying a military vehicle and
inflicting casualties, Iraqi witnesses said. Black smoke rose from the
burning vehicle on a road just outside the town.
In the northern city of Mosul, one insurgent was killed in an exchange
of fire with a US convoy yesterday. Earlier, four Iraqis were killed
and 15 injured in almost simultaneous rocket attacks on civilian and
police targets in the town.
Also yesterday, a roadside bomb exploded by a US patrol in Baghdad,
killing a US soldier and sparking a gunbattle with Iraqi children
nearby.
Australian premier John Howard and Bulgarian president Georgy Parvanov
meanwhile made surprise visits to Iraq yesterday, with both leaders
vowing to stand steadfast in the face of spiralling violence.
