Hostages Continue To Play Imporant Role In Resistance Strategy
Apr 14, 2004
By Omar Al-Fars, JUS
Hostages have been seized all over Iraq, changing the complexion of events on the ground. As the situation remains volatile, here is what we know from sources inside Iraq at the time of this filing Tuesday.
・An Iraqi Resistance organization has announced that it has released eight foreign hostages, who, it said, were truck drivers who had been captured while bringing supplies to the US occupation forces in Iraq. The release came in response to an appeal by the Board of Muslim "Ulama". The hostages belonged to several nationalities: three were Pakistanis, two were Turks, and there were one Indian, Nepali, and Filipino as well. Al-Jazeera TV broadcast a video showing scenes of the release on which each one of those set free gave his name and country of origin and showed his identity card and passport to the camera.
On the tape, a masked man said: "the hostages have been released in response to an appeal from the Board of Muslim 'Ulama' to release civilian prisoners and to treat them well. After the hostages pledged that they would never cooperate with the occupation forces again. This also serves to demonstrate to the world that we respect others so long as the others respect us and do not commit aggression against us." A masked Resistance fighter could be seen on the tape giving the released foreign hostages Iraqi money.
・Seven Chinese nationals who were seized Sunday in Fallujah have been freed by their captors. This surrender comes as part of the ceasefire agreement.
・Russian officials say eight employees of a Russian company working in Iraq have been set free, one day after they were kidnapped by gunmen in Baghdad. Officials in Moscow say the five Ukrainians and three Russians, working for Interenergoservice, have been released, and are in good condition. No other details were immediately available.
Another Russian energy company, Tekhnopromexport, with a sizable staff in Iraq now says it is evacuating all 370 of its employees contracted to work there. And the Interfax news agency reports Russian officials are planning to evacuate all Russian citizens from Iraq.
Moscow has ordered the evacuation of all of their foreign nationals from the country.
・The whereabouts and condition of three Japanese citizens kidnapped last week, and an American civilian abducted in another incident, remain unknown. Nine other Americans and three Czechs are missing. An element of confusion entered into the situation surrounding three Japanese hostages being held by a Resistance group called the Squadrons of the Mujahideen. On Saturday it was announced that the Squadrons had ordered their release. But on Sunday the head of the 'Committee for the defense of the Iraqi People' told al-Jazeera that the Squadrons had not in fact agreed to their release despite his efforts.
・The German government announced that the two men, reportedly German embassy guards, who disappeared on their way from Jordan to Baghdad on Saturday had probably been killed.
・Al-Jazeera TV obtained video footage showing two bloodstained dead bodies dressed in civilian clothing lying in a street surrounded by Iraqi citizens. Bullet wounds were visible on one body in the back and in the leg of the other. The voiceover said that the two dead persons had been members of the American Central Intelligence Agency working in Iraq.
