Israel "Full Partner" in manipulation of claims on Iraqui WMD
The US - UK justification for the illegal war on a Iraq was based
, we were told , on intelligence of Iraq's possessions of WMD .
It now turns out this intelligence was Israeli fabricated intelligence
- this explosive detail was never revealed to us - it was withheld
- covered up
This startling story first surfaced in the Jaffa Institute of Strategic
Studies quarterly magazine in December. An astonishing report by a
retired deputy director of the IDF military planning - Brigadier
General Shlomo Brom states that "Israel intelligence was a full
partner to the picture presented to the US and British
intelligence about Iraq's non conventional capabilities ." He states
that Israel produced "an exaggerated assessment of Iraqi capabilities
" and raises "the possibility that the Intelligence picture was
manipulated . "
While in the US and the UK there has been a clamour for an
investigation into the justification given for the war against Iraq,
Brom reminds us not to " forget that there was a third senior
partner to the assessment ... and that a third partner was Israel
" Brom states further " In the questioning of the picture painted
by coalition intelligence , the third party in this intelligence
failure is Israel , has remained in the shadows ... a critical
question to be answered is whether governmental bodies falsely
manipulated the intelligence information in order to gain support
for their decision to go to war in Iraq , while the real reasons
for this decision were obfuscated or concealed . "
To strengthen their case the US and the UK governments tried to
claim that Iraq was buying uranium from Niger. Despite the fact
that US ambassador Joseph Wilson discounted these claims as
ﾒgroundless " and as such they should not have been included into
Bush's State of the Union address. Tony Blair however insisted "
separate intelligence " was used and, the Foreign Office further
stated Britain's information was based on " additional evidence
other than documents forged or genuine " claiming it had an "unnamed
third country" intelligence.
It is widely accepted that Israeli intelligence is among the best
in the world and is deemed to be pre-eminent in its Middle East
intelligence gathering capabilities. Therefore General Broms article
came as a surprise, even in the Knesset where opposition Knesset
member Yossie Sorrid demanded a Knesset inquiry and got it . The
investigative committee was chaired by MK Yuval Steinitz and its
findings were delivered on 28th March. Although the inquiry is a
whitewash it confirmed general Broms claim that Israeli intelligence
assessments where - baseless - exaggerated and over speculative
What is telling is investigative committee member - MK Haim Ramon's
statement that Israeli intelligence agencies did not deliberately
mislead Israeli officials or try to push the US or the UK into
going to war against Iraq " we did not take the decision to go
to war , we were not telling the Americans or the British , do
this or don't do that ." Ramon's minority opinion concluded that
intelligence assessments of an attack on Israel were "unlikely to
highly unlikely."
There can be no doubt that Israel is capable of and determined to
insure itﾕs own security. This is clearly illustrated by its
bombing of the Ozirak nuclear reactor in 1981 in which Iraq was
helpless to stave off the Israeli attack. General Brom tell us "
before the war the defences establishment did not spare any cost
to deal with non-existent threats or threats with zero possibility
of actualisation " It is therefore inconceivable that Israel would
not have dealt with any perceived threat that it faced with alacrity.
Israel does not need the US or the UK to insure it security,
after all, it is the 4th largest military power in the world and
has all the means at his disposal for insuring its security.
However Israel would greatly welcome the US and UKﾕs destruction of Iraq,
Iran and Syria particularly if this dose not entail any cost to it self. It
serves Israel's hegemonic ambitions if the entire region were to
disintegrate while it consolidates its supremacy
Over here countless arguments have been publicly debated in the
build-up to the war, the war and the aftermath of the war. We
have also had two parliamentary inquiries and the Hutton report
and non of these have mentioned Israeli intelligence. Millions of
words and endless column inches have been printed - nothing has been
mentioned about Israeli intelligence . It is understandable why there
has been a news blackout on this issue as the ramifications of
Israeli connivance with the US and the UK is explosive in the extreme
