France on alert over rail bombs
Thursday March 4, 2004

France's interior ministry confirmed yesterday that the police and security services were on full alert following a series of threats by an unknown group to blow up railway tracks around the country unless it was paid a multimillion-pound ransom.
To prove its threats were serious the group, which calls itself AZF after a chemical factory which blew up in southern France in September 2001, directed police on February 21 to a time bomb buried under a railway line near Limoges in the south- west.
The device, made of diesel fuel and nitrate and fitted with an advanced timer, was "complex, efficient, and in full working order", a ministry spokesman said, adding that the bomb, which was detonated after a forensic examination, had sent a 35kg (77lb) section of railway track hurtling 25 metres (82ft).

Information from the group, called AZF, led to the recovery Feb. 21 of an explosive device buried in the bed of a railway line near Limoges in central France, the government said. Nearly 10,000 rail workers hunted for more bombs along thousands of miles of train tracks yesterday.
The bomb was powerful enough to rupture the track. It was made from a mixture of diesel fuel and nitrates, and had a sophisticated detonator, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

President Jacques Chirac's office and the Interior Ministry received at least three letters, on Dec. 10, Feb. 13 and Feb. 17, that threatened nine railway targets, officials said.
The Interior Ministry said the group had sent several letters demanding $4 million and 1 million euros, or about $1.2 million, to dismantle bombs it had laid along rail lines.

French police are focusing their search for a mystery terrorist group threatening the country's railways on a blonde woman aged about 30, Le Figaro daily reported today.
The woman is believed to made a phone call on behalf of the group which calls itself AZF. However, it was impossible to draw up an identikit picture of the woman as witness descriptions of her were too vague, the report said.
The group has threatened in a series of letters to detonate ten bombs arbitrarily placed within the entire French SNCF's rail network unless a multi-million dollar ransom is paid.
