In four months, FBI agents and scientists have unraveled many of the mysteries surrounding the strain of anthrax used in the deadly attacks in the fall. The "Ames strain," as it is called, is now known to be highly virulent, resistant to many vaccines and a perennial favorite with military researchers and bioterrorists.

But the lethal bug is decidedly not from Ames, Iowa.

It was a Texas strain, cultured from a Texas cow, federal officials now say.

The bacteria were isolated by Texas A&M University's Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory and shipped to an Army research lab in May 1981 in response to the Army's request for novel anthrax strains to use in testing the effectiveness of vaccines.

A search of long-forgotten Army documents finally resolved the mystery. The strain, it turns out, had come from Texas, which experienced anthrax outbreaks around 1980. The bacteria were isolated by the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostics Laboratory at Texas A&M University and shipped to USAMRIID in May 1981.

Dr. Gale Wagner of the College of Veterinary Medicine, with help from the University of Georgia, is coordinating the effort to help U.S. veterinarians and those in foreign countries - especially Chile, Argentina and Brazil - develop ways to ensure food safety and to prevent possible acts of bioterrorism.

Both diseases are rarely fatal, but they make a person very sick with flu-like conditions and cause high fever. Both are difficult to cure, and with brucellosis, once you have it, you usually have it for the rest of your life."
