Hizb Allah, Israel begin prisoner swap
Thursday 29 January 2004, 14:00 Makka Time, 11:00 GMT
Israel has confirmed the identity of three soldiers handed over by Lebanon's Hizb Allah resistance group as part of an ongoing prisoner swap.
After the Israeli army made the announcement on Thursday, Israel began releasing Palestinian detainees in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The Lebanese resistance group agreed to hand over the bodies of three soldiers and Elhanan Tannenbaum in exchange for 400 Palestinians, 23 Lebanese and 12 Arabs.
Earlier, two military planes landed in the German city of Cologne as the first phase enters its final stages.
Tannenbaum, who Hizb Allah says is a spy but Israel says is a businessman, was on one of the planes.
"I was treated very well by Hizb Allah," said Tannenbaum, captured in October 2000, weeks after the soldiers were seized.
An Israeli plane carrying around 30 Arab nationals and a German, accused by Israel of spying for Hizb Allah, touched down moments later.
Under the historic German-mediated deal, Israel will also repatriate the bodies of some 60 Lebanese fighters.
Among the Lebanese being freed are prominent Hizb Allah figures Shaikh Abd al-Karim Ubaid, kidnapped in 1989, and Mustafa Dirani, captured in 1994.
Both men were seized and held as bargaining chips for the release of missing Israeli airman Ron Arad whose plane was shot down over Lebanon in 1986 during the war.
Tannenbaum on TV
Lebanon's al-Manar broadcast footage of Tannenbaum speaking to one of its reporters.
"I came to Beirut to gather information about Ron Arad," Tannenbaum said in Hebrew. He was referring to the Israeli airman who was captured when his plane was shot down in south Lebanon in 1986.
"I also came to do things that would help my house," he said. It was not clear what he meant by that.
History of prisoner swaps
There have been six major prisoner swaps between Tel Aviv and Hizb Allah since Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982.
In 1983 Israel freed 4600 Arab detainees in return for six Israeli soldiers held in Lebanon.
In June 1984 Israel swapped 291 Syrians and the remains of 72 more for six Israelis and five bodies, only two of which are positively identified as Israelis. Israel also freed 20 Arab civilians held for spying and security offences.
Another 1150 Arab prisoners were exchanged in May 1985 for three Israeli soldiers in a deal that took almost nine months to negotiate.
Germany brokered a previous swap in July 1996, when Hizb Allah received the bodies of 123 guerrillas in return for the remains of two Israeli soldiers.
The resistance group also freed 17 fighters of the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army (SLA) militia, which in turn released 45 Lebanese captives.
