Israel stops Met inquiry on shooting

Israel yesterday refused to allow Scotland Yard detectives to be part of the investigation into the death of Tom Hurndall, a British student who was shot dead in the Gaza Strip.
The decision could lead to a diplomatic row.

Mr Hurndall, 22, was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier as he was shepherding children to safety in the town of Rafah, and died in a London hospital on Tuesday after being in a coma for nine months.
Yesterday, Dr Paul Knapman, the Westminster coroner, asked the Metropolitan Police "to establish the facts" surrounding the shooting before he held an inquest.
Mr Hurndall's family were hoping that a team from Scotland Yard's serious crime directorate, under the command of Det Supt Trevor Albutt, would be allowed to travel to Israel and interview the soldiers involved and other witnesses.
However, Shuli Davidovitch, Israel's spokesman in Britain, said: "No one will be allowed to interfere in the course of Israeli justice.
"There has been a thorough and independent investigation into the shooting and charges have been brought."
A sergeant in the the Israeli Defence Force has been indicted on six charges, including one of aggravated assault - although this may be increased to manslaughter.
However, members of Mr Hurndall's family claim he was deliberately shot in the head by soldiers and that senior Israeli officers are covering up a murder.
Mr Hurndall, a photography student at Manchester Metropolitan University, had volunteered to be a human shield with the International Solidarity Movement in the Gaza Strip when he was shot.
The Hurndall family believes that the Israeli decision confirms their view that there has been a cover-up.
His mother, Jocelyn, said: "I think this makes it very difficult to trust any decision that is made by the Israeli government."
