Kerry Wins Washington Caucuses
Democratic Front-Runner Takes Early Lead in Michigan

Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts captured Democratic caucuses in Washington state and took an early lead in Michigan today as voters there held contests to determine their choices for the Democratic presidential nomination.
In Washington, Kerry took an early double-digit lead over former Vermont governor Howard Dean and never trailed. Four other candidates were far behind. In Michigan, Kerry was well ahead of the rest of the field, with Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and Dean fighting it out for second place.
Democrats turned out for the caucuses energized by polls showing a slide in President Bush's popularity.
At a rally in Richmond this evening, Kerry whipped several hundred supporters into a frenzy by repeatedly bashing President Bush, Washington Post staff writer Michael D. Shear reported.
"George Bush's days are numbered," Kerry told the crowd. "We deserve a president who doesn't look for the lowest common denominator." He added: "We don't have a broken budget in Washington, D.C. We have a broken value system."
Supporters waved signs bearing Kerry's slogan, "The Real Deal," and chanted "No more Bush" and "No More Rumsfeld," referring to the president and his defense secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld. Fresh from campaigning in Tennessee, Kerry never mentioned his Democratic opponents and vowed to win Virginia's primary on Tuesday.
"Let's go out and do the work we have to do," Kerry said before heading to the Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson dinner at the convention center next door to the rally in Richmond. "Let's go out and make it happen."
Kerry was appearing at the dinner in with Edwards, Clark and New York activist Al Sharpton. Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio opted not to attend the event, as did Dean.
Kerry, the winner of seven primaries or caucuses held to date, was favored in both Michigan and Washington before the voting there, leaving his five remaining rivals to concentrate their efforts elsewhere.
Edwards, who won his first primary in South Carolina last week, was focusing on upcoming primaries Tuesday in Tennessee and Virginia.
