CIA to interrogate Saddam

Washington, Dec 17 - The Central Intelligence Agency has been put in charge of the interrogation of Saddam Hussein, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Tuesday as the US military attempted to use intelligence gained from his capture to bust up resistance in Iraq.

Hussein will remain in US military custody at an undisclosed location, but CIA Director George Tenet will manage the former Iraqi leader's interrogation, Rumsfeld said.

"It was a three minute decision and the first two were for coffee," Rumsfeld told a Pentagon news conference.

Rumsfeld said the handover of responsibility would not mean that different techniques or tactics would be used to try to pry information out of Hussein, who was captured Saturday in a raid on a farm south of Tikrit.

The decision to put the Saddam interrogation under the CIA was striking, however, because in the past Rumsfeld has sought to expand the Pentagon's role in intelligence.

Rumsfeld would not comment on Hussein's initial interrogations despite reports that he denied playing a direct role in leading the insurgency and denied the existence of weapons of mass destruction.
