Two South Koreans Dead, Two Hurt in Iraq Shooting
Sun November 30, 2003 10:30 AM ET
SEOUL (Reuters) - Two South Koreans were killed and two others wounded in a shooting in Iraq near ex-president Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit on Sunday, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said.
A ministry official said by telephone the identities of the dead and wounded had not yet been released, but they were believed to be electricity workers on contract to a U.S. firm.
The U.S. military in Iraq said three civilians were killed in an attack on their convoy south of Tikrit in what appeared to be the same incident. A spokesman in Tikrit would not specify the nationality of those killed in the attack.
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun has committed his country to send more troops to Iraq but has yet to make the politically sensitive decision whether to include combat forces in the expected 3,000-strong contingent.
Some 675 South Korean medical and engineering troops have been based in Nassiriya, 375 km (235 miles) southeast of Baghdad, since May without incident.
