Iraq: 2 Japanese Diplomats Slain
Ambushed En Route To Tikrit
Reuters
November 30, 2003
The bodies of two Japanese diplomats murdered by unknown assailants in northern Iraq on Saturday (November 29) were lying in a hospital in Tikrit on Sunday (November 30.)
With the bodies of the two Japanese was the body of their non-Japanese driver.
Outside the hospital, the driver's son grieved for his death.
The two diplomats had been en route to a conference on the reconstruction of northern Iraq to be held in Tikrit, about 10-15 km from the ambush site.
Iraqi police Captain Dalaf Faris Muhammed al-Kraim, who was with the police unit which went to the site of the attack said, "We were at the police station when a car came and informed us of an accident about 8 km away. I took my unit to the accident site. We found two dead and one barely alive. We transported them in a police car to hospital."
Al-Kraim said the victims were killed in "an area called Abassiya, eight km away from Dijla district".
The Japanese diplomats had been travelling in a car with a Lebanese number plate, al-Kraim said.
Japan has passed a special law to enable it to send troops to Iraq, but in line with the nation's pacifist constitution, they can only be sent to "non-combat zones" and can take part only in reconstruction and humanitarian work.
Japan has also pledged 5 billion U.S. dollars in grants and loans to rebuild Iraq, the biggest donor after the United States.
