U.S. Embassy in Tokyo hasn't paid rent since 1998
Monday, December 8, 2003 at 03:44 JST
TOKYO — The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo has not paid the Japanese government rent for state-owned land since 1998, government officials said Sunday. They said the total amount owing from the last six years is at least 15 million yen.
The rent for about 13,000 square meters of the state-owned land inside the embassy compound has gone unpaid because the talks between Japan and the United States on the amount of new rent are proceeding with difficulty. The U.S. is arguing that Japan gave it the land, the officials said. (Kyodo News)

you pay more for a better view.... anyone seen the Ethiopian Embassy in Japan or Britain? Anyway Japan pays everything for the US. That is everything from electricity, water, gas to land, missiles and staff (police, workers on base) and of course not to mention free parking of Aircraft Carriers, helicopters, etc, etc....
Check this out...
now spot what's wrong with this picture.... yes indeed "bungalow + biiiiiiiiiig garden" for US and the Japanese less greener side of the fence houses.... anyone care to remind me why we are paying to have their houses refurbished...
interesting

If every country got an equal plot of land it would be one thing, but it seems like some countries have way more land than others. The way I look at it, the Japanese government should assign a modest amount of land to each country but if they want more they should have to pay for it. And none of this selling their free land to make money - although you have to give props to that Scandinavian country.

"UK Embassy pays about one US dollar a year."
Man, I think it's about time to found the Democratic Plesiosaur Republic and set up an embassy in my apartment. I will reciprocate, of course, by granting embassy sites in Loch Ness.
Takers?

The Democratic Plesiosaur Repulblic, eh?
I just set up the embassy of the Democratic Make The World Safe For Democracy Republic in my apartment.
This little rent dispute will be solved amicably.

I also remember this Spanish guy a couple of yours ago, who claimed to be head of state of non-existent country in Europe, and who actually managed to open up an official embassy in some African or Latin American country.

...when a country (call it country "A") crushes another country (call it country "B") in a war that country "B" started, and then country "A" puts an occupying army in country "B" for 9 years, writes its constitution, then guarantees its defense successfully for the next 60 years or so, country "A" is quite often allowed to put its embassy anywhere it so chooses and pay as little or as much rent for said embassy as it so desires.
In this particular case, it would appear that country "B" really needs the cash any way that it can get it....
Country "A" says: "Wait a minute! You gave us that."
"B": "That was before and this is now."
"A": "But you gave it to us after--you know--the war (whispered)."
"B": "Actually, you took it. But we don't talk about that so don't even go there."
"A": "OK...either way, you admit it's our, though, right? And its only 15 million dollars."
"B": "15 million yen, actually."
"A": "Yen?!"
"B" "Hai! Yen-desu."
"A": "So...amortized over 6 years that's about 2.5 million yen per year, or roughly 20 to 25 thousand dollars...correct?"
"B": "Hai!"
"A": "You mean all of us 50 thousand-dollar-a-year autocrats are sitting around and arguing about 20 thousand dollars per year in rent?"
"B": "Hai!"
"A": "Why?"
"B": "Naze? Nondedaro? (teeth sucking sound ensues)"
"A": "We have to fax Washington, but it's like the middle of the night there (looks at watch)"
"B": "Asoka (more teeth sucking)."
"A": "I'm sure we can get this straightened out. I would pay you myself right now but we can only bring 10 thousand at a time through customs."
"B": "How much cash do you have now?"
"A": "About 2 grand and some change."
"B": "Soapland ikemaska?"
"A": "Hai!"

"If every country got an equal plot of land it would be one thing, but it seems like some countries have way more land than others"
Japan does billions of dollars of business with America, sends tens of thousands of tourists and students there, holds trillions of dollars of US bonds, and is dependent on America for its national security needs. Do you really think its odd that the US embassy would be larger than, say, that of Malawai or El Salvador?
That's not to say the US shouldn't perhaps pay more for its land, but the "all countries should be treated equally" thing is a bit unrealistic given the amount of use various embassies are likely to get.
this is news?

Hilarious...5 years to talk about some dinky $24,000 a year (which is peanuts to the US govt.)!

I'm sure the mayor of Tokyo is behind this. He could get that stupid bank tax going so he's trying to get money somewhere else. Also he hates the US.

I think the Japanese have one Embassy. The rest are consulates. No?
24G a year is peanuts. The US is obviously stuck on some point like"You don't have to pay rent anymore" which all of a sudden changed to "About that rent thing..."
To the people complaining about Japan paying for the bases....
Japan gets the world most state of the art military for the cost of facilities. The US gets a forward deployed base but only has to provide the military. Seems pretty fair both ways to me. No? Its pretty obvious that any country that crosses swords with Japan automatically crosses them with the US as well. No? So the Japanese are actually getting national security pretty cheap. No? And don't even mumble SDF. Wet paper bag comes to mind.

Since 1998? They should be kicked out and have some paying tenants move in, or build a 60 story office building on the site.
Where is the proof? Show it or get out. Americans always make excuses.
They were paying and now they said the land was given to them, again where is the proof or deed or contract. Is this another Thanks Giving Day? Give the American Indians food and thank them for their land. Get real!
