Coalition Forces Drop Daisy Cutters On Taliban Base
Aug 26, 2003 By Zafir Jamaal, JUS
In retaliation for strikes by the Taliban over the weekend that killed a dozen or more coalition soldiers, 1000 Afghan troops backed by US-led coalition forces and US air support bombed a Taliban base in the Dozi mountains approximately 170 miles southwest of Kabul.
Afghan officials say that dozens of Taliban have been killed as the result of Daisy Cutter bombs dropped on the mountain hideout however the Pentagon puts the death toll at 14.
"In this operation 40 to 50 Taliban were killed and their bodies are still laying on the ground," said Ahmadullah Watan Dost, a spokesman for the Zabul provincial government told reporters.
The bases were "smashed to dust" by coalition bombing, he said, adding that there were no reported Afghan or coalition casualties.
There is no report in yet from the Taliban, who have retaken parts of Afghanistan over the past several weeks.
NNI reports that the Taliban force was thought to include Mullah Dadullah, one of the top commanders accused of ordering the execution of a foreign Red Cross worker this year however this claim can not be confirmed at this time and it is unknown if any senior figures were among those killed.
The airstrikes included F-16 fighters, A-10 "War Hogs" and Harrier ground-attack jets, Pentagon officials said.
JUS reporters in Pakistan received reports from eyewitnesses in the area who said that approximately 50 ordinanced "pulverized" the Taliban position and that the area has been sealed off to prevent locals from reaching the area.
Afghan troops had been building up over the weekend after raids by an estimated 200 to 300 Taliban fighters left 14 people dead in the area.
Earlier Voice of America reported that at least 40 suspected Taliban fighters were captured in joint raids by Afghan and U.S. forces in southeastern Afghanistan following a series of attacks.
Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Omar Samad said on Monday that the arrests took place in Paktika province and that those in custody are suspected of being associated with the al-Qaida and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's group.
Hekmatyar is believed to have forged an alliance with the Taliban and Al-Qaida to oust the puppet government of Hamid Karzai and expel coalition forces from the country.
