The British officer killed in a bomb attack in Iraq was named today by the Ministry of Defence.
Captain David Martyn Jones, 29, of the 1st Queen's Lancashire Regiment, died yesterday when the ambulance he was travelling in was targeted near Basra, southern Iraq.
The married captain, from Louth in Lincolnshire, was in the vehicle with two other soldiers when the remote-controlled explosion was detonated.
Mr Jones's wife, Isobel, said in a short statement: "I am extremely proud of Dai. He was a wonderful husband who served his country with great courage."
The other two men sustained shrapnel wounds which were not life-threatening. Capt Jones was the first British soldier to die in combat since June 24, when six Royal Military Police were killed as a crowd surrounded a police station at Al Majar Al-Kabir, near Basra.
Lieutenant Colonel Jorge Mendonca, commanding officer of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, described Capt Jones as a "courageous" soldier.
He said: "Dai Jones was a courageous, warm-hearted and very popular officer who will be sorely missed.
"The battalion's thoughts are very much with his family and especially his wife Izzy."
Mr Jones was on his second tour in Iraq. Having served in earlier operations with the 1st Armoured Division, he returned to the Gulf on June 10 with the Queen's Lancashire.
An MoD spokesman said Capt Jones specialised in civil military co-operation - rebuilding Iraq.
He was involved in the construction of schools and buildings, rather than working on a patrol base, the spokesman said.
It is understood the captain was in the ambulance for a routine matter and was on his way to have some stitches removed when the bomb detonated.
