One British soldier has been killed and two others injured in an explosives attack in southern Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
It is understood the soldiers were hit by a remote-controlled device hidden in, or on, a lamppost.
It exploded as the soldiers, understood to be travelling in a military ambulance, passed it by.
The conditions of the two injured men are not thought to be life-threatening.
In an unrelated incident, the MoD confirmed a British soldier had been found dead in bed on Wednesday night.
The MoD said there was no suggestion this had been due to hostile activity or that it was suicide.
If confirmed, the explosives incident is the second in which British soldiers have been killed in Basra since the war ended.
Six British soldiers were killed in Al-Majar Al-Kabir on 24 June.
Basra has, on the whole, remained relatively calm since the war, compared to US-controlled areas in and around Baghdad.
But recently tensions have arisen amidst ongoing fuel and power shortages, which have been making daily life very difficult, with temperatures of more than 50C.
