BAGHDAD, July 27 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - Five U.S. soldiers were killed and five others wounded in two separate incidents in south and northeast of the Iraqi capital, during the last 24 hours.
One U.S. marine was killed and another wounded in a grenade blast south of Baghdad early Sunday, July 27, a military spokeswoman said.
"At 2:35 am (2235 GMT Saturday), a marine was killed and one wounded during a grenade attack by a bridge," Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted Specialist Nicole Thompson.
The attack on the soldier from the Marine First Expeditionary Force was by Al-Haswah, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Baghdad.
On Saturday, July 26, three U.S. soldiers were killed and four were wounded in a grenade attack in Baqubah, northeast of Baghdad.
The attack on the soldiers from the U.S. Army's Fourth Infantry Division occurred at around 11 am (0700 GMT).
The wounded were evacuated to a U.S. medical treatment facility, Central Command said in a statement.
In a separate incident, eyewitnesses said a U.S. military Hammer personnel carrier came under an attack by a hand grenade at the western side of Al-Karkh in Baghdad early Saturday, but did not inflict any casualties among American soldiers.
In another related development, Al-Sa’a newspaper reported Saturday that 7 U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi translator were killed in an attack on July 21 near Baghdad Tourist Island in northern Baghdad. The incident was not reported by the U.S. forces till this date.
The death raised the toll to 14 in the last seven days, the highest number of casualties in one week since Washington declared major combat operations over on May 1.
A total of 49 U.S. soldiers have been killed in resistance operations since May 1, with more than half the deaths coming in July, according to an AFP account.
