Two U.S. Soldiers Killed in Ambush in North Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday when they were ambushed by guerrillas firing guns and rocket-propelled grenades near the northern city of Mosul, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad said.
The soldiers, from the 101st Airborne Division, were attacked near the town of Tall Afur, west of Mosul. They were evacuated for medical treatment but later died.
Another soldier was wounded in the ambush, the spokesman said.
"There were no reported enemy casualties," he said.
U.S. forces occupying Iraq have suffered almost daily ambushes since they ousted Saddam Hussein in April. But although there have been several clashes in Mosul itself, attacks elsewhere in the north of the country have been rare.
Of the 37 U.S. soldiers killed in hostile action since President Bush declared major combat over on May 1, almost all were attacked in Baghdad or the restive Sunni Muslim heartland to the north and west of the capital.
Tall Afur lies in the Sunni tribal regions between Mosul and the Syrian border. In the days following Saddam's fall, tribal leaders in the area denied reports they were sheltering some of his relatives, including his wife and daughters. But they said they would protect them if asked.
The United States has also said some foreign pro-Saddam fighters have been slipping into Iraq across the Syrian border.
Washington blames Saddam loyalists for the wave of attacks on its forces since Baghdad fell on April 9.
Sunday's attack brought to four the number of U.S. soldiers killed in the last 48 hours -- one was killed in Baghdad while guarding a bank Saturday and another in the tense Sunni town of Falluja Friday afternoon.
Four U.S. soldiers were also wounded in the Rashid district of Baghdad Saturday morning when a home-made bomb was detonated near their patrol, and one American soldier was wounded when a convoy came under fire Friday in the town of Miqdadiya, northeast of Baghdad.
Since U.S.-led forces invaded Iraq on March 20, 151 U.S. soldiers have been killed in hostile action, more than the 147 killed in the 1991 Gulf War.
Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of the U.S. ground forces in Iraq, told a news conference Saturday that the wave of attacks would not weaken Washington's resolve.
