Poll: Majority in U.S. Think Iraq Casualties Too High
13.07.2003 [00:17]
Over half of 1,006 Americans surveyed said the level of U.S. casualties in Iraq was unacceptable, a new poll by ABC News and the Washington Post said on Friday.
The results of the survey pointed to rising concern over American casualties in Iraq, falling confidence in the Bush administration, and increasing doubt over whether the war launched by U.S.-led forces in March was worth fighting.
The poll was taken July 9-10 amid growing criticism of Bush's handling of the war, the intelligence he used in justifying it and mounting U.S. casualties since the fall of Baghdad.
For the first time, a majority -- 52 percent -- of those polled said the number of casualties in Iraq was unacceptable. And while 57 percent said the war was worth fighting, that had fallen from 70 percent at the end of April.
Fifty percent believed the Bush administration had intentionally exaggerated its evidence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Eighty percent expressed concern about getting "bogged down" in a long mission in Iraq.
Bush's approval rating for handling the situation in Iraq fell by 17 points since the end of April, to 58 percent now. His overall job approval rating was down to 59 percent, matching its lowest in the poll since Sept. 11, 2001.
The telephone survey was conducted among a random national sample of 1,006 adults. There was a three point margin of error.
