According to Iraqi sources, the national resistance carried out the first martyrdom operation, targeting American forces stationed in Baghdad airport. The attack lead to between 10 and 15 fatal losses to American forces, as well as tens of wounded and the destruction of at least 3 military vehicles according to these sources.

Eye-witnesses at the airport said that the explosion occurred when the American forces were demolishing parts of the airport in order to set up a large prison complex for the detained Iraqis. While several trucks were transporting rubble, one of the drivers returned, his truck loaded with explosives after unloading the rubble outside the airport. Inside the airport, he carried out the explosion which led to great physical and material losses among the ranks of the Americans.
