U.S raid on Turkish special teams
Sedat ERGIヨN
About 100 American soldiers raiding the office of the Turkish Special Action Teams in Suleymaniye, took 11 Turkish officers to Kirkuk, on grounds that these were to attempt to assassinate the Kurdish governor of Kirkuk.
Turkey condemned the operation strongly and Ankara demanded from U.S. to release her soldiers immediately.
The American soldiers FridayA detained eleven Turkish soldiers including three officers and 8 non-commissioned officers in Suleymaniye, the capital city of the region controlled by Talabani forces of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
The incident caused tension between Ankara and Washington. Ankara protested the incident which occured Friday afternoon demanding the release of 11 soldiers at once. Ankara and Washington had an intensive diplomacy traffic until late hours Friday over this extraordinarily unpleasant incident which occured for the first time between the armies of the two NATO allies.
After they raided the Turkish office at about 14.00 O'clock Friday, the American soldiers cut off the phone lines of the office. There were a Turkoman woman, and 3 Kurd Peshmerges allocated by Talabani to the office as a guard, in the building during the raid,.
The eleven Turkish soldiers are now kept in an American plant in Kirkuk.A
The Turkish side did not find the American excuse that the eleven officers were detained on suspicions of an assasination attempt on the governor, convincing.
Suleymaniye , where Turkisbh troops are deployed, is in the north of the Green line dividing the Kurdish zone.
