US soldier killed, 10 injured, in Iraq attacks

A US soldier was killed and 10 were injured in separate attacks around Baghdad
last night.
A US base near Balad, 55 miles north of the Iraqi capital, came under mortar
fire late last night, injuring 10 soldiers.
Another US soldier was killed in an attack on his convoy in Baghdad, the US
military said today.
The Balad base sits within an area known as the "Sunni triangle", to the north
and west of Baghdad. It was there that Saddam Hussein enjoyed his greatest
support, and that US troops are in the middle of a sweeping operation to root
out Saddam loyalists.
A US military spokesman, Corporal Todd Pruden, said that the injured soldiers
had been taken to medical facilities.
The convoy attack in which the US soldier was killed happened at around 8.30pm
last night in eastern Baghdad, Cpl Pruden added.
The soldier, who was inside a Bradley fighting vehicle when he was shot, was
evacuated to a military hospital, but died of his wounds. His name was not
immediately available.
News of the attacks brought a sombre start to American independence day
activities for the 150,000 US troops stationed in Iraq.
They have been beset by daily attacks from an increasingly bold insurgency,
raising fear of a political and military quagmire just two months after
President Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1.
At least 27 US troops have been killed in hostile fire since Mr Bush's statement.
Washington yesterday offered a reward of $25m (£15m) for information leading to
the capture of Saddam, and $15m for either of his sons, Uday and Qusay.
"We believe it is important to do everything we can to determine his whereabouts,
whether he is alive or dead, in order to assist in stabilising the situation,"
the US secretary of state, Colin Powell, said yesterday.
The reward for Saddam matches the bounty being offered by Washington for Osama
bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader who has been missing since US forces ousted the
Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
The last reported sighting of Saddam was on April 9, a day before the capital
fell, in the Azamiyah neighbourhood in the north-east of the city.
He was targeted by at least two major air strikes, but there was never any proof
that either had been successful. Based on information from captured colleagues,
officials increasingly believe that they were not.
The US believes that Saddam loyalists are warning Iraqis not to cooperate with
US occupation authorities, saying that the ousted leader will one day come back
to punish those who do.
The US search for Saddam loyalists, dubbed Sidewinder, has netted at least 20 "
high-value" fugitives, but none of the most wanted targets. Arms and ammunition,
including hundreds of rocket-propelled grenades, have also been seized.
