ハマス、ファタハ、イスラム聖戦機構とPFLP等の抵抗グループは、占領終了を条件に停戦に同意すると表明。
Palestinians: We accept cease-fire if Israel ends occupation
Al-Khalil, June 19, IRNA -- The main Palestinian resistance groups, including Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad and PFLP, said Thursday they would agree to a cease-fire with the Israeli occupation army if and when the Zionist apartheid regime agreed to end its colonialist occupation of Palestinian land.
"We are fighting for our freedom from foreign occupation, if that occupation departs, our resistance will cease," said Dr. Mahmoud al-Zahhar, a Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Zahhar said the resistance groups were not opposed to the principle of reaching a truce with the apartheid Israeli regime, but insisted on reciprocity.
"You know, the world knows that the occupation breeds resistance, hence if the occupation ends, the resistance will end automatically."
He scoffed at American and European claims that the Palestinian resistance to the Israeli occupation was the cause of violence and instability in Palestine.
"We didn't invade them, they invaded us, we didn't destroy their homes, they destroyed our homes, we didn't send tanks and armored personnel carriers to wreak havoc on their streets and neighborhoods, but they did send their tanks and warplanes to kill our men, women, and children and wreak havoc on our population centers.''
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas will begin another round of talks with representatives of the resistance groups in Gaza.
PA sources said Abbas was hoping he would be able to convince the resistance leaders to give international efforts to restore calm a chance.
Abbas also hopes that Israel will agree to pull out its occupation troops from the main Palestinian population centers in the West Bank and Gaza.
The sources intimated that in the absence of a genuine Israeli pledge to that effect, Abbas would fail to reach any accords with the resistance factions.
On Wednesday, President Bush reportedly asked Egypt to help rebuild PA security forces, now virtually completely destroyed by a sustained Israeli campaign which started soon after the outbreak of the Palestinian intifada or uprising nearly 34 months ago.
However, it seems highly unlikely that, even with outside assistance, Abbas will be able to overcome deep anti-Israeli resentment, emanating from years of institutionalized Israeli repression and terror against the 3.6 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
