JMSDF ships return from Indian Ocean operations
Rear Adm. Robert C. Chaplin, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Japan spoke
with Vice Adm. Takashi Saito, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF)
Commandant, Yokosuka District, at the recent return of three JMSDF ships
from the Indian Ocean. The JDS Kirishima (DDG 174), JDS Harusame (DD 102)
and JDS Tokiwa (AOE 423) were instrumental in the success of the allied naval
operations in Operation Enduring Freedom.
Three Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ships returned to their homeport of Yokosuka on May 20 after deploying to the Indian Ocean in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The JDS Kirishima (DDG 174), JDS Harusame (DD 102) and JDS Tokiwa (AOE 423) received a heros welcome when they moored at the JMSDF naval docking facility Y-1 and Y-2 in downtown Yokosuka Bay. Among some of the dignitaries representing the United States Navy who were on hand to welcome the three ships back were Commander, U.S.Naval Forces (CNFJ), Japan Rear Adm. Robert C. Chaplin, CNFJ Chief of Staff Capt. Daniel Hartwell and Commander,Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 Commodore Michael Mahon.
Master Chief Petty Officer of the JMSDF Ikuo Saga said that the three ships experienced many new challenges underway and the JMSDF naval force made unprecedented accomplishments in the role of allied support working closely with the U.S. Navy.
The cooperation between the JMSDF and United States Navy are like nothing similar in the world. During their underway period, Tokiwa supplied oil more than 230 times to allied ships in the region. Over 600 officer and enlisted personnel took part in Operation Enduring Freedom.
The Kirishima, sister ship of DESRON 15s USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54), departed on Dec. 16, 2002, and the Harusame and Tokiwa left in November of 2002, en route to their Indian Ocean area of operations.
Saga said that when the opportunity came for Japan to contribute to the success of Operation Enduring Freedom, the JMSDF ships were ready to deploy.
This was the first such opportunity that the Aegis destroyer JDS Kirishima could take part in, and we felt it was a very
good experience to be able to contribute; we feel everyone benefited by being part of something so important in the world.
