Two UN Guards Killed in Northern Afghan Clashes
MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan -- Three people, including two guards of the United Nations, were killed and seven people wounded in clashes near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, officials said on Saturday.
The guards were killed during an exchange of fire between fighters from two rival factions on Friday night, a UN official said. The clash, several kilometers (miles) to the north of Mazar, lasted for about four hours.
"They were on their way to guard a guest house of the UN and got killed as they approached the gate," said the official who declined to be identified.
The official said the third person who was killed was a civilian. He had no information about casualties among the combatants.
The main city in northern Afghanistan has been the scene of intermittent clashes between forces loyal to three rival war lords since the defeat of the hardline Taleban in late 2001.
The three factions are represented in the U.S.-backed government of President Hamid Karzai and the clashes there, and in other parts of the country, have raised doubts about his government's stability and its ability to impose order.
Aid agencies have for months been appealing for better security in various parts of the country.
Witnesses in the north said the United Nations had halted the movement of its staff in the city until Sunday as a precaution.
The latest clashes involved fighters from the mostly ethnic Tajik Jamiat Islami faction and the Shiite Muslim Hezb-i-Wahdat group.
Faction officials confirmed the clashes as well as the number of civilian casualties. But they declined to give further details about the tense situation in parts of the city.
