Terrorism

So the sighting of one man, it seems, is what
prompted this announcement from the Department of
Transport that all British planes to and from
Kenya will be grounded from 10pm on Thursday
night.
The man in question is accused of masterminding
two major terrorist attacks in Kenya which,
combined, claimed 240 lives.
Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, also known as Harun, is
on the FBI's most wanted list for a string of
atrocities.
It's claimed he was one of the architects of the
bombing of the Israeli owned Mombasa hotel in
November, which killed more than ten people, and
the failed attempt to shoot down an Israeli
airliner on the same day.
He's been indicted in the States for the 1998 US
embassy bombing in Nairobi which killed more than
200 Kenyans.
The Kenyan security authorities say Harun has been
seen in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.
More than 10,000 Britons visit Kenya for holidays,
and the government there security had been
stepped-up at foreign diplomatic missions.
Harun is described as a "top al-Qaeda commander" -
he's a citizen of both Kenya and the Comorros
Islands and speaks more than four languages.
It's believed he escaped to Somalia after the
November bombings - a Kenyan police source is
quoted as saying he may already have returned to
Mombasa.
The United States has already warned against non
essential travel to Kenya.
The Department of Transport ban only applies to
British airlines - Kenya Airways is unaffected.
The Kenya Government said the British ban was
"extreme" - the next Kenya Airways flight is due
to leave Heathrow for Nairobi at 8 tomorrow night.
