US raids on Najaf schools promise havoc
By Christine Hauser NAJAF, IRAQ
At daybreak, Jawad Latif was starting guard duty at a Shia religious school in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf when there was a knock on the door.
"I opened the door and there were armed men. They said, 'We are government police and we must search for weapons'," Latif said, standing in the mosaic tile and brick courtyard of the Al Qawam religious school, or madrassa, in Najaf's city center.
"I wanted to tell them this is a religious school and that not even the security forces of the former regime of Saddam Hussein did this."

On Wednesday, crowds gathered outside the office of local Shia religious leader Moqtada Sadr across from the Imam Ali shrine.
"We came to talk to Sadr about this issue of the raids on the schools," said Najaf resident Sahib Ebeid. "It is unacceptable to us."
Sadr issued a statement which was passed to the crowd.
"Even the previous regime did not violate the sanctity of the religious schools. It serves the interests of the infidel West only," it said.
