AYATOLLAH JANNATI CALLS ON THE IRAQI TO RAISE UP AGAINST COALITION
TEHRAN 2 May (IPS) Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, an influential Iranian hard line cleric called Friday on the Iraqi people to "raise up" against American and British invaders, telling them to learn from Palestinian struggle against the Israelis.
"The Iraqi nation will ultimately come to the conclusion that they have no other choice than to revert to a Palestinian-type Intifada", the Ayatollah, who is the Secretary of the powerful, conservatives-controlled Council of Guardians told hundreds of Iranian worshippers in Tehran.
He also lashed out at the use of force and violence by US troops in Iraq and said, "The Iraqi people, after release from a wolf like Saddam, have now been trapped by another wolf (like America)".
Ayatollah Jannati, who is a close associate of the Iranian orthodox leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’i, described as "false" US claims that it respected human rights in Iraq and sought to establish democracy in that country and called on Iraqis to determine their fate by following clerics and maintaining their unity.
"America is making fun of all such issues as democracy and human rights", Mr.Jannati said to the repeated chants of "Death to America" at weekly Friday prayers.
"America is committed to none of UN resolutions nor democracy", the cleric said and denounced Washington for acting as if it were the "custodian" of the Iraqi people, according to the official news agency IRNA.
He described Iraq and Palestine as "the most important issues of the Islamic world" and addressing the Islamic states, he said "did not Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (the founder of the Islamic Revolution of Iran) warned you to resist America and Israel and endanger their interests? You did not listen and now it is your turn", he said.
Ayatollah Jannati also took a swipe at US for "using" the terrorist Mojahedeen Khalq Organisation (MKO) to repress the Iraqi people.
The US military has confirmed that it had reached an agreement with the group, dubbed as "Monafeqin" or "hypocrites" by the Iranians, to use its members for the identification of Iranian agents and members of the "Badr Brigade" infiltrated in Iraq following the collapse of Saddam Hoseyn’s regime.
Washington accuses the Islamic Republic of interfering in Iraqi interior affairs, mobilising the Shi’ite population of Iraq against the Coalition and having infiltrated hundreds of its own agents inside Iraq.
The agreement infuriated Iranian officials and denounced American’s "hypocrisy".
MKO has internationally been classified as a 'terrorist organisation', including by the United States and the European Union.
"America is telling a lie and playing tricks while it boasts of fighting terrorism and uses those who have a long history of terrorism, for repressing the Iraqi people", the Ayatollah said, referring to reports that the MKO served as a branch of the notorious Iraqi military intelligence (estekhbarat) for crushing the Shi’a and the Kurds.
"Munfaqin served Saddam for years. Now, they have become America's servants", he added.
The MKO, backed, financed and trained and armed by the now toppled Iraqi dictator, is officially outlawed in Iran because of a long record of political assassinations, bomb blasts and terrorist schemes since 1981, was based in neighbouring Iraq from where it planned sporadic attacks against the Islamic Republic.
But after American forces bombed out the MKO bases in Iraq, forcing hundreds of the group’s members to flee out of Iraq, Tehran offered clemency to the Mojahedeens and said they could return to Iran on condition they ask for pardon and that they have no plainant party. ENDS IRAQI INTIFADA 2503
