Explosive Vests Found in Baghdad
Suicide bombings feared; U.S. troops are warned to stay away from cheering
crowds.
By Tony Perry, Times Staff Writer
BAGHDAD -- Marines hunting for secret caches of weaponry have discovered suicide
-bomber "vests" rigged with explosives and hidden detonators.
The discovery heightened concern among Marines about terror attacks by forces
loyal to Saddam Hussein. Four Marines and a Navy corpsman were injured today
when a suicide-bomber walked to a Marine checkpoint and detonated his bomb.
"The longer we stay the more vulnerable we are to this kind of terror tactic,"
said Capt. Aaron Robertson, intelligence officer with the 2nd battalion, 23rd
regiment, a reservist battalion from California.
The battalion discovered dozens of the vests, filled with metal ball bearings,
at an elementary school where the Iraqi Army had ousted the students and stored
thousands of rounds of ammunition, hundreds of rockets and handguns, and other
weaponry. Also found were large quantities of plastic explosives.
"This is bad stuff," said an explosives expert as he lighted a small portion of
the plastic explosives to test its volatility. "I don't think there's any doubt
about it: there are people walking around Baghdad right now just waiting for the
opportunity to kill a Marine."
Also today, a Marine task force raced north to Tikrit, Hussein's ancestral home.
The force is prepared to engage any lingering para-military forces. Other
Marines headed toward the cities where the Kurdistan forces have established
strongholds.
The Marines, one high-ranking officer said, will provide the Kurds with "a
reality check" to prevent them from attempting to expand their holdings, which
could anger Turkey, a key American ally.
Suicide-bombing, a tactic used by Palestinians in their fight against Israel,
was applauded by Hussein, who provided rewards to the families of such bombers.
He also reportedly paid the family of a suicide bomber who killed four American
soldiers in the days before the battle for Baghdad.
Hussein was an enthusiastic backer of the Palestinian cause, including terror
bombing. Marines a week ago found an abandoned terrorist-training camp east of
Baghdad adorned by pictures of Hussein and Palestinian terrorist leaders. Bomb-
making material was discovered amid the expansive camp.
Marines have fanned out across Baghdad hunting for Iraqi weaponry and also
unexploded ordnance left from the intensive bombing and artillery shelling
campaign that preceded the fall of Baghdad.
Marine brass have warned the rank-and-file to keep their distance from the
cheering crowds that line the streets whenever Marine convoys pass.
In a trip today through the streets, Iraqis waved, rushed the vehicles, and gave
thumbs-up signs. Drivers, honking their horns and waving, raced alongside the
convoy vehicles.
"That's the problem," said the explosives expert. "Ninety-nine percent of the
people are happy with us. But that one percent, the true America haters, are
there, mixed among them."
