BAGHDAD, Apr 11, 2003 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- The Japanese Embassy in Baghdad has fallen prey to looters, with television sets and other expensive items removed from the premise, the Japanese Embassy in Jordan said Friday.
Looting has been rife in Baghdad since the collapse of the Saddam Hussein government. It has affected the embassies of Russia, Germany and South Korea as well.

Japanese diplomats said looters took away mostly expensive fixtures in the embassy, including television sets and computers.

The looting apparently took place sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning before the embassy's local staff showed up to work.

The embassy, located in an upscale neighborhood in central Baghdad, was operating with local Iraqi staff after Japanese diplomats were evacuated before the start of the war.
