Moscow dismisses allegations

Speaker Nabih Berri spoke Wednesday of a possible Russian-US deal with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein that saw him giving up power and allowing the entry of US troops to Baghdad without resistance.
“Before anything else, we should learn why the Russian ambassador returned to Baghdad and what (US National Security Adviser) Condoleezza Rice did in Moscow (on a trip earlier this week) and whether Saddam is at the Russian Embassy,” Berri told reporters at Parliament on Wednesday.
Berri’s version of events was disputed by Russian diplomats in Moscow.
“This type of claim absolutely does not and cannot correspond with reality,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said in
a statement. “This is just another attempt to put our Baghdad embassy under threat.”
Berri was answering questions from reporters about the sudden collapse of the Iraqi regime and the fall of Baghdad on Wednesday morning.
One of the many interpretations and analysis for the apparent sudden collapse of Hussein’s regime in Baghdad was a deal struck between the Americans, Russians and the Iraqi president that saw the latter stepping down in exchange for his life and moving to the Russian Embassy or even Moscow.
Berri said that “the Americans should not be conceited” as their victory is a “victory against the regime and not against the people.”
Discussing the rapid turn of events on Wednesday, as ordinary Iraqis appeared to take back most of their capital from the regime, Berri said that “a people occupied from the inside will not be able to resist an occupier from the outside.”
The speaker warned of an American attempt to impose an agreement on the Iraqi people similar to the May 17 Accord that was signed between the Lebanese and Israelis in 1983, but was later annulled.
He said the resistance of the Iraqi people to the “occupation” will not be less than that of the Lebanese. - With agencies
