Even liberators can let their 'standards' drop

The US battle to win the hearts and minds of the people of Iraq and
other Middle-East nations suffered a minor hiccup on 9 April, when US
marines briefly placed a US flag over the head of a statue of Saddam Hussein
in central Baghdad. A crowd of Iraqi civilians had attacked the statue after
US armoured vehicles occupied the square earlier the same day in what were
the first public signs that the Iraqi regime's grip on power had been
massively eroded.
I was in conversation with a US Central Command spokesperson at the
exact moment satellite television images showed the soldiers attaching the
Stars and Stripes to the monument. The spokesperson was noticeably shocked
by the image and several other officials within the same area were heard to
cry "no, no" in reaction to the soldiers' actions. The flag was rapidly
removed, but images of the incident are sure to receive high-level coverage
among Arab states. It will likely do little to remove the perception in
these nations that the US has arrived as an occupying, rather than a
liberating force in Iraq.
Jubilant civilians placed an Iraqi flag at the base of the plinth
after Saddam's statue had been toppled and destroyed.
