TANK SHELLS MEDIA HOTEL
The US says a tank fired a single round at a Baghdad hotel, which injured western journalists, in response to incoming rifle and rocket fire.
At least five people were wounded in the strike at the Palestine Hotel, where many international media companies are based, including the Sky News team.
The wounded include staff of the British-based news agency Reuters.
Reuters has its offices on the 15th floor of the hotel. The 15th and 17th floors of the hotel were struck, blowing out windows.
Chater said he had seen a tank aiming at the hotel. "Iハ was standing on the balcony of our room looking at the city when there was a huge explosion and then shouts and screams from people along our corridor."
Elsewhere, US Marines say they have captured the Rashid military airfield in south-east baghdad.
The US military says it is increasing its presence inside Baghdad and has met no organised effort to displace its forces. Troops have pushed into the capital from the north as well as the south.
One US tankハwas seen crossing to the eastern side of a central Baghdad bridge, the first time US forces have advanced over the river Tigris.
A reporter said that as the lone tank drove over the river, US planes roared overhead, dropping bombs on targets close to the eastern end of the bridge.
The bridge leads to the centre of the city, where many key Iraqi government buildings are located.
The US military says an A-10 tankbuster plane has come down near Baghdad airport.
The pilot ejected safely.
Allied command in Qatar said there was no indication yet whether the plane had been fired on or suffered mechanical failure.
A-10s have been carrying out attacks on targets in central Baghdad.
Witnesses say US planes have been hitting a Republican guard base in the east of Baghdad.
Families areハreported to be fleeing from the city.
State television failed to broadcast a morning news bulletin and instead showed only old footage of Saddam being cheered at rallies and played patriotic songs.
The US military indicated that they had targeted television transmitters.
Local state-run Baghdad Radio went on transmitting for a time, playing national music and songs in praise of Saddam, but later fell silent.
